Thrifty Gene Hypothesis

An evolutionary hypothesis proposing that genetic variants that enhance energy storage efficiency or reduce energy expenditure were favoured by historical selection in environments with intermittent food scarcity, and that the same variants increase susceptibility to obesity and metabolic disease when modern environments provide persistent caloric abundance.
