The study of holomorphic or arithmetic functions on the complex upper half-plane (and their generalizations) that transform in prescribed ways under the action of modular groups or congruence subgroups, organized by weight, level and character, and studied via q-expansions, Hecke operators and their connections to L-functions and arithmetic invariants.
