Definition
For a linear operator on a Banach or Hilbert space, the essential spectrum is the subset of the spectrum consisting of spectral values that are stable under compact (or relatively compact) perturbations — equivalently, those λ for which the operator minus λ fails to be Fredholm of index zero; this excludes isolated eigenvalues of finite multiplicity in the common definitions.
