Demineralization

The acid‑mediated dissolution and net loss of mineral ions (primarily hydroxyapatite) from calcified dental tissues—enamel and dentin—resulting from sustained local decreases in pH that dissolve mineral crystals and reduce tissue mineral density and hardness; an initially reversible, dynamic process that may progress to cavitation if the mineral loss outpaces protective and reparative mechanisms.
