Jede quadratische Matrix über einem kommutativen Ring erfüllt ihr eigenes charakteristisches Polynom: Ist p(λ) = det(λI - A) das charakteristische Polynom einer n×n-Matrix A, so gilt p(A) = 0 (die Nullmatrix), was eine polynomiale Identität für A darstellt.
