Figure–Ground Principle
Definition
A perceptual organizing rule in visual cognition whereby elements are interpreted as either figure (foreground, salient object) or ground (background, contextual field), determined by cues such as edge, contrast, closure, convexity and relative size. The principle governs how viewers separate perceptual objects from their surroundings.
