Distributed Cognition

An analytic framework that treats cognition not as located solely inside an individual's mind but as an emergent property of interactions among people, material artifacts (e.g., documents, user interfaces, instruments), and environmental structures; cognitive tasks and representations are thereby shared, transformed, and coordinated across agents and artifacts during information activities.
