Degree

Degree is an integer measure of size or complexity: for a polynomial it is the highest exponent with nonzero coefficient; for a field extension it is the vector-space dimension of the extension over the base; for a map of varieties it is the number of preimages generically, and similar meanings appear across algebraic contexts.
