Communication Accommodation Theory

A sociolinguistic model describing how interlocutors adjust speech, lexical choices, paralinguistic features and broader communicative behaviour to converge with or diverge from their conversational partners; adjustments reflect social motives (solidarity, distance, identity, status) and can be automatic, strategic, or both.
