Von Mises Yield Criterion

Engineering & Applied Technologies Dictionary
Definition
A yield condition for ductile, isotropic metals stating that plastic yielding begins when the von Mises equivalent stress (σ_vm), computed from the deviatoric part of the stress tensor and proportional to the square root of the second invariant J2, reaches a material-specific yield stress in simple tension. Hydrostatic (mean) stress does not affect σ_vm.
