A hydraulic reservoir—open or closed—connected to a pipeline or penstock that provides a local volume buffer to absorb or supply fluid during rapid flow or pressure transients, thereby reducing peak pressures, damping oscillations and stabilizing upstream/downstream hydraulic head.
