A cylindrical shaft whose circumference carries multiple longitudinal teeth or splines that engage complementary grooves in a mating hub to transmit torque while permitting relative axial displacement when the mating fit provides clearance; splines also provide centring and distribute torque over many load-bearing surfaces.
