Soret Effect

A thermodiffusion phenomenon in multicomponent mixtures where an imposed temperature gradient induces a steady-state concentration gradient and associated mass fluxes; the magnitude and sign of the effect are characterised by Soret or thermal diffusion coefficients specific to the species and mixture.
