Soft Palate

The posterior, muscular part of the roof of the mouth (velum) composed of muscle fibers, aponeurosis and mucosa that elevates and retracts to separate the oral cavity from the nasopharynx during swallowing and to modulate oral resonance during speech; it is mobile and functionally distinct from the hard palate.
