Shear-Out Failure

A mechanical failure mode in which the substrate material adjacent to a fastener (bolt, rivet, screw) shears along a plane so that the fastener pulls through or the surrounding material is expelled, producing loss of the joint or containment without the fastener itself necessarily fracturing.
