The ordered composition and steering of network or service functions (physical or virtual) — e.g., firewall, NAT, DPI, load balancer — so that traffic matching a classifier traverses those functions in a prescribed sequence and with necessary per‑flow state or context preserved, enabling modular service construction independent of physical topology.
