Definition for "self-defense" in Criminal Law
A justification permitting necessary and proportionate force to repel an imminent unlawful threat. It requires a qualifying threat and limits force to what is reasonably necessary to prevent harm. It does not justify retaliation, punishment, or force disproportionate to the threat addressed. It determines whether otherwise criminal force is treated as legally permissible.
