A theory that successful metastatic colonization requires both disseminated cancer cells (the ‘‘seed’’) with compatible biological traits and permissive organ microenvironments (the ‘‘soil’’) that provide molecular, cellular and structural support for survival, proliferation and sustained outgrowth.
