Secondary Caries

A carious lesion that forms at or immediately adjacent to the margin of an existing restoration, driven by a localized cariogenic microenvironment (plaque stagnation, microleakage, material degradation or marginal discrepancy) and manifesting as demineralization of tooth structure contiguous to the restoration.
