Abrupt surface damage on sliding contacts produced when lubricant film or thermal capacity is insufficient to prevent localized plastic deformation, adhesion, and material transfer; manifests as scoring, smearing, or localized welding between asperities under high contact temperature or boundary‑lubrication excursions.
