Sapir–Whorf Hypothesis

A family of claims about language–thought relations: the strong form (linguistic determinism) that language fixes or determines thought is historically contested; the weaker form (linguistic relativity) holds that habitual language categories and lexical distinctions can influence certain cognitive processes and perceptual discriminations in domain- and task-specific ways.
