Principle of Symmetric Criticality

The statement that, for a variational problem whose functional is invariant under the action of a symmetry group, a critical point of the functional restricted to the fixed-point subspace (the symmetric subspace) is a critical point of the full functional; this allows searching for critical points within symmetric ansätze.
