Parturition

The physiological process by which a pregnant female expels one or more offspring, comprising the coordinated onset of uterine (myometrial) contractions, progressive cervical dilation, expulsion of the fetus(es) and the subsequent delivery of fetal membranes; a staged process whose timing and mechanics vary by species and may be altered by medical or obstetric intervention.
