Oral Mucosa

The mucous membrane lining the oral cavity, consisting of surface epithelium and underlying lamina propria (connective tissue), which protects, lubricates and provides sensory and immunologic functions; it includes regionally specialized subtypes (lining, masticatory and specialized mucosa) with differing keratinization and permeability characteristics.
