The systematic examination of coins and related monetary artifacts (including tokens, ingots, dies and hoards) using typology, inscriptional reading, metallurgical and wear analyses, and archaeological context to derive chronological markers, economic indicators, political authority, circulation patterns and iconographic meanings for past societies.
