Mitochondrion

A double‑membrane, semi‑autonomous organelle in most eukaryotic cells that generates chemical energy (ATP) largely via oxidative phosphorylation, hosts parts of central metabolic pathways, contains its own small genome (mtDNA) and participates in signaling, calcium handling and programmed cell death.
