Proteolytic conversion of inactive matrix metalloproteinase zymogens (pro‑MMPs) into catalytically active MMPs by removal of an inhibitory propeptide or other activating modifications, enabling targeted degradation of extracellular matrix components at host–microbe or tissue–implant interfaces.
