Laser Cooling

Natural & Formal Sciences Dictionary
Definition
A family of techniques that use momentum exchange between photons and particles (atoms, ions, sometimes molecules or mesoscopic objects) to reduce kinetic energy and thus lower the effective temperature of the motional degrees of freedom; includes Doppler cooling, sub-Doppler (Sisyphus) cooling, resolved-sideband cooling, and cavity/optomechanical variants.
