The deliberate application of water—by surface, sprinkler, drip, subsurface or other engineered delivery methods—to soil or crops at controlled timing and quantities to maintain or restore plant-available moisture when rainfall is insufficient, with attention to source, quality, scheduling and distribution uniformity to meet crop water requirements and minimize adverse effects.
