A systematic, ongoing process of collecting, analysing and interpreting data on infections and related indicators in healthcare settings (including microbiology results, clinical diagnoses, device‑ or procedure‑associated events and syndromic signals) to detect trends, clusters or outbreaks and to guide prevention and control measures.
