Vertical Accountability

Mechanisms and processes by which actors lower in a political hierarchy—particularly citizens, voters, local civil society or subnational institutions—hold higher‑level authorities answerable for policy decisions and performance through voice, voting, petitions, media scrutiny, collective action and formal complaint or electoral mechanisms.
