Settlement

A place or locus where people lived—ranging from temporary camps, seasonal encampments and hamlets to villages, towns or cities—identified in the archaeological record by material indicators of habitation (for example, dwelling structures or postholes, hearths, domestic refuse, burials, or infrastructure) that together permit inference about scale, duration and organization of habitation.
