A framework that explains patterns of lexical, grammatical and discourse choices as conditioned by situational parameters—commonly summarized as field (purpose/content), tenor (social roles/relations) and mode (channel/genre); registers are probabilistic varieties indexed to contexts rather than fixed codes tied to individual speakers.
