Public Figure Doctrine

A legal principle in defamation law that treats persons who have achieved pervasive fame, hold public office, voluntarily inject themselves into public controversies, or otherwise have substantial access to channels of effective communication as ‘public figures’, such that they must prove a higher degree of fault by the speaker (e.g., knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard for the truth) to re
