Prototype Theory

A cognitive‑semantic model that treats membership in many natural categories as graded rather than binary: category structure is organized around central, highly typical exemplars (prototypes) and other members are included to degrees determined by similarity, family resemblance and characteristic features, rather than by a single set of necessary and sufficient conditions.
