Opacity

Degree to which a material prevents transmission of light under specified illumination and observation conditions; in arts and coatings, the operational property that determines whether an underlying layer, ground or backing remains visible when a layer is applied. Opacity is determined by absorption and scattering within the material together with layer thickness and pigment concentration.
