Metafiction

A mode or technique of fiction in which the work self‑consciously foregrounds its own manufactured status, narrative mechanics, or authorial processes—through direct address, overt commentary on storytelling, mise en abyme, or other means—so that the fiction’s artifice is a thematically operative element.
