Lactation

The physiological process by which mammary glandular tissue synthesizes, secretes and, in many species, ejects milk that supplies nutrients, bioactive factors and fluid to neonates; lactation encompasses stages (mammogenesis, colostrogenesis, lactogenesis, galactopoiesis, involution) and is modulated by hormonal, nutritional, neural and management factors.
