Loss of normal structural or functional integrity of the gastrointestinal mucosal barrier—comprising epithelium, tight junctions, mucus layer and associated immune components—resulting in pathologically increased permeability to luminal microbes, microbial products, or antigens and potential translocation into the lamina propria or systemic circulation.
