Grice's Maxims

A set of four conversational heuristics proposed to realize the Cooperative Principle: Quantity (be as informative as required), Quality (do not assert what you believe false or lack evidence for), Relation (be relevant), and Manner (be clear, brief, orderly). Speakers’ adherence to or deliberate flouting of these maxims is used to explain generation of conversational implicatures.
