Fluid Element

An infinitesimal but macroscopically large material volume of a continuum fluid used as a bookkeeping element in continuum mechanics: it carries mass, momentum and energy and is the object whose motion is described by the material (Lagrangian) derivative; it is not a molecule but a limiting parcel where field variables are well defined.
