Fatigue Crack Growth

Progressive extension of a pre‑existing crack in a material caused by repetitive (cyclic) mechanical loading, in which the crack growth rate (da/dN) is principally governed by the cyclic stress‑intensity‑factor range ΔK and by local mechanisms (plasticity, microstructure, and environmental interactions) until unstable fracture occurs when a critical toughness limit is reached.
