Explication

A method in analytic and conceptual practice that replaces an imprecise, vague, or theoretically awkward concept (the explicandum) with a more exact, explicit, and theoretically useful concept (the explicatum) by specifying criteria, usage rules, and justificatory virtues (such as precision, fruitfulness, and simplicity) while acknowledging possible divergence from ordinary usage.
