A measured ratio of energy consumption to a specified activity, output, area, or economic value (for example kWh·m⁻²·yr⁻¹, MJ per unit of product, or kWh per dollar of GDP), used to compare energy performance across systems, buildings, processes or sectors within an explicitly stated measurement boundary and activity metric.
