A systematic, time‑stamped, and documented assessment of an object's physical state that records materials, dimensions, visible defects, past repairs, current damage, vulnerabilities and environmental context—often including standardized descriptive fields and photographic evidence—to establish a baseline for conservation, handling, loan, insurance and research.
