The dynamic, bidirectional relationship between building systems (envelope, HVAC, controls, lighting, sensors) and occupant behaviours, preferences and presence patterns that together determine actual energy use, thermal and acoustic comfort, indoor environmental quality and maintenance needs; includes adaptive behaviours, control interactions, feedback loops and occupant heterogeneity.
