Buffer Zone Collapse

The breakdown or loss of function of a geographically defined area created to separate rival actors (states, armed groups, communities, or institutions) such that the zone no longer provides its intended separation, neutral administration, or stability and thereby permits renewed contact, contestation, conflict, or administrative disorder across the formerly buffered interface.
