The measurement and mapping of underwater topography and depth contours of lakes, rivers, estuaries, and oceans using acoustic (single‑beam, multibeam sonar), lidar (in shallow coastal zones), echo sounding, or manual sounding methods to create bathymetric charts and digital elevation models of submerged terrain.
