Annotation

A discrete note, label or markup attached to a primary text that supplies explanatory, bibliographic, interpretive or evaluative information distinct from the text’s authored content; annotations are recorded separately from the original wording and are intended to modify a reader’s understanding, navigation, or subsequent use of that text.
