Adit

A nearly horizontal entrance tunnel driven from the surface into a hillside or mountain to provide access, drainage (gravity dewatering), or direct exploitation of an underground deposit at the same elevation as the portal. An adit typically conveys vehicles or personnel where the topography allows surface entry at the working level without extensive vertical excavation.
